How do you decide a gift?

So, it's the holidays. If gift-giving is a tradition you enjoy or grew up doing during the holidays, what's your criteria for the perfect one?

Honestly, I usually just think about what the person actually uses or talks about a lot. Something small that shows I’ve been paying attention usually goes further than anything fancy. Keeps it simple and less stressful too.
