Customizing rare dolls?

During quarantine, my neighbor’s daughter got into dolls. Her dad gave her a DD Asuka Langley doll head from Mandarake as a gift. They didn’t know it was rare until someone on Instagram said so. She put it on a DD-f3 body, dressed it in a school outfit, and called it “Not Asuka.” I think she wants to paint it to look like a magical girl. Do younger collectors often paint rare doll heads like that?

@pinki3pie I think the doll belongs to the owner. If she's not a collector focused on future resale and truly wants to turn it into her own magical girl character, then she absolutely should!
Customizing is a huge part of the hobby, and the goal is enjoyment. It’s actually a great story that a rare piece was liberated from a glass case and is being used as a canvas.

I’ve seen a lot of doll hobbyists repainting faces (called “face-ups”) using soft pastels, watercolor pencils, and sealant. It’s common in BJD / custom doll communities. If she does it lightly, with reversible materials, it might keep more of the original charm.
